March 24, 1942: Civilian Exclusion Order No. 1 was issued. More than 200 Japanese Americans on Bainbridge Island were given six days to leave, allowed to carry only what they could. It began the forced removal of over 120,000 people — two-thirds of them U.S. citizens.
