Its curved granite walls list the names of the ten incarceration camps and quotes from Japanese Americans whose lives were shaped by war and confinement. At its center, a bronze crane entangled in barbed wire, designed by Nina Akamu, rises as both symbol and warning \u2014 hope struggling against fear.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">After the <a href=\"https:\/\/quietamericans.com\/staging\/civil-liberties-act\/\">Civil Liberties Act of 1988<\/a>, the Go For Broke National Veterans Association began the campaign for a national memorial on federal land. The effort evolved into the National Japanese American Memorial Foundation (NJAMF), a nonprofit dedicated to public education about the incarceration of Japanese Americans during World War II.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">In 1992, President George H. W. Bush authorized the construction of a memorial to \u201ccommemorate the experience of American citizens of Japanese ancestry and their parents who patriotically supported this country despite their unjust treatment during World War II.\u201d<\/p><p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6406cadb The U.S. Department of Defense described the ceremony: \u201cDrizzling rain was mixed with tears streaming down the faces of Japanese American World War II heroes and those who spent the war years imprisoned in isolated internment camps.\u201d<\/p><p class=\"p1\">Veterans of the <a href=\"https:\/\/quietamericans.com\/staging\/100th-infantry-battalion\/\">100th Infantry Battalion<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/quietamericans.com\/staging\/442nd-rct\/\">442nd Regimental Combat Team<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/quietamericans.com\/staging\/mis\/\">Military Intelligence Service<\/a> stood beside survivors and families who had carried the memory of those camps for more than half a century.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">During the war, more than 120,000 Japanese Americans were <a href=\"https:\/\/quietamericans.com\/staging\/executive-order-9066\/\">incarcerated<\/a> by their own government. Over 33,000 volunteered to serve in the U.S. military.
