They bore the shame, the loss, and the trauma in silence \u2014 many out of fear, others out of cultural conditioning. Gaman. Endure. Don\u2019t make waves.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">But silence didn\u2019t mean consent.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">In 1980, the federal government created the Commission on Wartime Relocation and Internment of Civilians (CWRIC) to investigate the mass incarceration of Japanese Americans. The commission wasn\u2019t just tasked with reviewing records \u2014 it traveled across the country, holding public hearings to listen directly to those who had lived through the camps.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">The hearings began on August 4, 1981 in Los Angeles, California. And for the first time, thousands of Japanese Americans \u2014 young and old \u2014 stood up and spoke.<\/p><p><!-- \/wp:paragraph She and others in the redress movement understood that legal arguments alone wouldn\u2019t move Congress. What the country needed to hear was the pain. The injustice. They laid the groundwork for the <a href=\"https:\/\/quietamericans.com\/staging\/civil-liberties-act\/\">Civil Liberties Act of 1988<\/a> \u2014 a formal apology and reparations from the U.S. government.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Getting heard wasn\u2019t easy. There was fierce, organized opposition. Lillian Baker, founder of the group ironically named \u201cAmericans for Historical Accuracy,\u201d gave a fiery testimony accusing Japanese Americans of being \u201cshameless\u201d for seeking redress. At one point, she physically lunged at Jim Kawaminami \u2014 a WWII veteran of the <a href=\"https:\/\/quietamericans.com\/staging\/442nd-regimental-combat-team\/\">442nd RCT<\/a> \u2014 and tried to rip the written statement from his hands mid-testimony. But the crowd stayed calm. They were a turning point for the Japanese American community.
