Miyoshi Umeki made history.<\/p>

She became the first Asian woman to win an Academy Award<\/b><\/span>, earning Best Supporting Actress for her role as Katsumi in Sayonara<\/i>, a postwar film about interracial romance and prejudice. Dressed in a traditional kimono, she walked onto the world\u2019s biggest stage and quietly shattered a barrier.<\/p>

But unlike so many Oscar winners whose careers skyrocket after a win, Umeki\u2019s career faded. Offers slowed. Roles didn\u2019t come. Hollywood didn\u2019t know what to do with an Asian woman \u2014 even an Oscar-winning one. Despite her talent as an actress, comedian, and singer, Umeki was quietly pushed to the margins.<\/p>

She would later appear on television in The Courtship of Eddie\u2019s Father<\/i>, but her film career never recovered. In an industry that celebrates \u201cfirsts,\u201d there was little effort to build on her achievement.<\/p>

Miyoshi Umeki broke through. But she wasn\u2019t allowed to break out.<\/p>

In fact, no Asian woman would win an acting Oscar again until Michelle Yeoh, 65 years later. From 1958 to 2023, Miyoshi Umeki stood alone.<\/p>
