But not the end of hate.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-575a4777 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"575a4777\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">June 30, 1946: The U.S. government officially shut down the War Relocation Authority (WRA), ending the federal incarceration of over 120,000 Japanese Americans.\n<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3861e9c0 e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"3861e9c0\" data-element_type=\"container\">\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-449df9b0 e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"449df9b0\" data-element_type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e983a98 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"e983a98\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"p1\">The camps had already begun to empty the year prior, but by mid-1946, it was official: The U.S. government ended its wartime incarceration of more than 120,000 Japanese Americans. The barbed wire fences came down. The guards left. The government closed its books on what it had done.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">But for the people who had lived behind those fences, the story didn\u2019t end. <\/p><p class=\"p1\">Most left camp with little to nothing. Each incarceree received a train ticket and $25 in government assistance \u2014 a meager sum that barely covered a few days\u2019 needs. Many had no homes to return to. Their properties had been sold, vandalized, or seized. Some were lucky \u2014 white neighbors had protected their farms or businesses. But those were rare exceptions.<\/p><p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-24b320f5 e-con-full class=\"p1\">For returning Japanese Americans, the racial landscape was different, but familiar: communities without full civil rights, forced to navigate prejudice, segregation, and limited opportunity.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">Temporary housing became a patchwork solution. In Seattle, the old language school turned into makeshift housing \u2014 dubbed the Hunt Hotel \u2014 where three residents tragically died by suicide in the 14 years that followed. In Burbank, the Winona Housing Project trailer park hosted dozens of families. It wasn\u2019t home. But it was something.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">In Los Angeles, Japanese Americans came back to a city that had changed. During the war, Black Americans had migrated to Southern California from the South in search of wartime jobs. Some found tension. But many found themselves in the same cycle: excluded, blamed, and left to rebuild on their own.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">The job market was brutal. Employers were hesitant to hire Japanese Americans. Many ended up in low-wage, labor-intensive jobs. Some returned to farming. Others scraped together enough to open small businesses. Some died before they had the chance. Others left on the same train that had taken them into incarceration. Pets, too, had been left behind \u2014 hundreds of dogs and cats, killed as a so-called humane measure.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">The federal government spent $80 million on the incarceration program. The economic losses to Japanese Americans? Estimated at $250 million. But the numbers don\u2019t tell the whole story. The human cost \u2014 the trauma, the broken families, the lost time \u2014 remains incalculable.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">The camps closed. But the injustice didn\u2019t. The racism didn\u2019t. The trauma didn\u2019t.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">June 30, 1946 marked the end of the War Relocation Authority.
